Manufactured Gas Plants (MGP)

GEI assists clients in the management of former manufactured gas plant (MGP) sites, and has led developments in this field for more than 25 years. We have respect for the manufactured gas plant legacy, and we offer a unique understanding and knowledge of the industry to our clients. Our MGP experience includes work at sites where a long history of varied manufacturing uses resulted in multiple sources and types of contamination in need of investigation and remediation. Contaminants of concern have included PAHs, VOCs, coal tars, heavy metals, PCBs, pesticides, and phthalates in soil, groundwater, surface water, and sediment.

In addition to our involvement in historical investigations, site characterizations, risk assessments and feasibility studies at nearly 500 MGP sites for utility and industrial clients, GEI has completed over 50 remedial designs for MGP sites, including caps, hydraulic control systems, slurry walls, reactive walls, pipe sealing and liner systems, excavation with off-site treatment, and in situ stabilization.

To help our clients stay abreast of issues affecting MGP sites, GEI produces a quarterly newsletter covering selected environmental issues in the electric and gas industry.

As a research contractor for Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Gas Technology Institute, and numerous utility companies, GEI has been selected on many occasions to evaluate new or innovative ways to deal with MGP contaminants and wastes of concern to the electric/gas utilities industry. As such, GEI has developed an extensive resume in applied research and field applicability of remediation technologies. Additionally GEI has played a leading role supporting the EPRI and GRI MGP conferences. Most recently, GEI founding principals, John Ripp and Dennis Unites, assisted in the coordination of MGP 2007, the EPRI conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

GEI has also been involved on the international level, having organized MGP USA 2008 in Mystic, Connecticut; MGP 2006 in Reading, England; and serving as technical advisors to MGP 1995 in Prague, Czech Republic.
