Senior ecotoxicologist brings over 25 years of specialized ecology, limnology and environmental toxicology experience to national firm DENVER, Colo. — November 17, 2009 — GEI Consultants, Inc., one of the nation’s leading geotechnical, environmental, water resources, and ecological science and engineering firms, announced today that Robert (Bob) W. Gensemer, Ph.D has joined the ecology practice as a senior ecotoxicologist. GEI’s ecology division has specialized in aquatic biology and ecotoxicology since 1979. Reporting to Steven Canton, ecology practice leader and member of GEI’s board of directors, Dr. Gensemer will manage projects that involve the development of site-specific water quality standards, use-classification modifications, and the development of new water criteria, as well as conduct and review terrestrial and aquatic ecological risk assessments. In addition to water quality standards and risk work, Dr. Gensemer will be responsible for collaborating with GEI’s in-house aquatic biology laboratory in matters related to whole effluent toxicity (WET) testing, specialty toxicity testing, and low-level nutrient chemistry. “Bob is an internationally recognized expert in multiple areas of ecotoxicology, including the behavior of metals, water quality factors that affect toxicity, rules for criteria development in North America and Europe, and general issues affecting the regulatory community - from both a regulated community and government agency perspective,” said Canton. “He is a strong complement to GEI’s existing ecology practice, while his specialized expertise enables us to further support and service our diverse client base.” Dr.Gensemer’s technical work at GEI will focus on providing high quality, scientific support based on a thorough understanding of appropriate regulatory guidelines and current scientific literature findings. He is also familiar with the unique challenges of evaluating the ecological impacts of human activities in arid western environments. A principal investigator of several projects conducted under the Arid West Water Quality Research Project (administered by Pima County, AZ), Dr. Gensemer focused on the evaluation and modification of ambient water quality criteria in effluent-dependent and ephemeral water courses in the arid western U.S., including Colorado, NewMexico, Arizona, Nevada, and California. His former project experience includes conducting and overseeing ecological risk assessments for both aquatic and terrestrial habitats, general aquatic toxicology, and the development and modification of ambient water quality criteria for protection of aquatic life. Many of these projects involved the review of government and industry generated risk assessments and supporting technical reports, participation in and planning for multi-stakeholder technical meetings, generation of technical reports and peer-reviewed scientific publications, and presentations at project meetings and scientific conferences. Dr. Gensemer received a bachelor’s degree from Ohio Wesleyan University with a major in botany and a minor in chemistry, and a doctorate in biological sciences and limnology from the University of Michigan. A member of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), the Water Environment Federation, and the Pacific Northwest Clean Water Association, Dr. Gensemer has published over fifty technical papers and articles.
