GEI Completes Three Water District Projects in California’s Central Valley

August 10, 2011 —

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—August 10, 2011 — GEI Consultants, Inc., one of the nation’s leading water resources, geotechnical, environmental, and ecological science and engineering firms, announced today that it has completed projects for three water districts in California’s central valley. Through these activities, the firm has successfully implemented improvements for the Semitropic-Rosamond Water Bank Authority, the North Kern Water Storage District, and the Berrenda Mesa Water District, allowing them to accomplish their respective goals related to management of California’s water resources.

Groundwater Banking Program: Initial Recharge and Recovery Facilities Improvement Project
Semitropic-Rosamond Water Bank Authority

GEI was retained by the joint-venture of the Semitropic Water Storage District, Rosamond Community Services District and the Valley Mutual Water Company to plan, design, provide construction management services, and monitor the multi-phase Antelope Valley Water Bank project.  This large scale banking project has a storage capacity of 500,000 acre-feet with an annual 100,000 acre-feet capacity (32.5 million gallons per day) for recharge and recovery. These activities are accomplished through recharge basins and new and existing wells. In addition, GEI prepared the application and secured $5M in funding from a Bureau of Reclamation grant through the 2009 American Recovery Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The project was completed in 2011, and the first two phases are operational. Additional phases will be implemented through future funding opportunities.

Groundwater Banking Program: Calloway Canal to Lerdo Canal Intertie
North Kern Water Storage District

The Calloway Canal to Lerdo Canal Intertie is a bi-directional water conveyance pipeline linking the North Kern Water Storage District Calloway Canal to the Lerdo Canal. The facilities will be used to divert and deliver wet-year Central Valley Project water for groundwater recharge and support groundwater levels. GEI planned, designed and provided construction management services for this project, which consists of a one-mile long, 96-inch reinforced concrete pressure pipe; a 400-cfs, 3800HP pumping plant complete with concrete work, earthwork, metalwork, electrical, instrumentation and trash racks; three farm turnouts; a crossing of the Friant-Kern Canal; tie-in connections to the Calloway Canal and Lerdo Canal; and lining of portions of the existing 8-1 Canal. The project is partially funded by the Bureau of Reclamation through the 2009 ARRA for which GEI prepared the grant application. The project team completed all project requirements on a compressed schedule, accomplishing the goals set forth by the funding agency. The project was completed in 2011.

Modifications to Crossings at Highway 46
Berrenda Mesa Water District

Through an agreement with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the Berrenda Mesa Water District (District) retained GEI to engineer, design, acquire rights-of-way, and provide construction management services for the relocation of irrigation conveyance facilities.  The relocation was needed to accommodate the widening of State Route 46 near Lost Hills, California. The project required the relocation of two siphon crossings, a 45-inch concrete cylinder pipe (Conduit “C”) crossing, District turnouts, and the on-farm irrigation facilities of landowners in the immediate vicinity. In addition to project activities, GEI was responsible for enforcing project criteria established in compliance with state funding requirements. Due to sensitivity to the economic and operational concerns of the adjacent landowners, as well as to minimize traffic impacts on State Highway 46, GEI completed project activities on an accelerated schedule, which required extensive coordination with Caltrans, the landowners and the District. The project was completed in 2011.
