Montclair, NJ—January 20, 2012— GEI Consultants, Inc., one of the nation’s leading geotechnical, environmental, water resources, and ecological science and engineering firms, announced today that Robert Blauvelt, senior environmental consultant in GEI’s Montclair, New Jersey office has co-authored Encyclopedia Of Pollution: Earth, Air and Water, a 768 page, two-volume set published by Facts on File Science Library. As a geologist with more than 25 years of experience and a frequent lecturer at Rutgers University, Mr. Blauvelt compiled an overview of the major environmental disasters that have occurred since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution with co-author Alex Gates, a Rutgers University geology professor and department chair. The encyclopedia was chosen as its 2011 Editor’s Choice for environmental science by The American Library Association (ALA), which highlights some of the best research and research-based publications available to the school library media community. “We’re extremely proud of Bob’s accomplishments as one of GEI’s senior geologists, and even more pleased that he has applied his background to educate the scientists and environmental engineers of today and tomorrow,” said Frank Leathers, P.E., president of GEI. “GEI strives to improve the environment in every project we undertake. Bob Blauvelt and Alex Gates have created a remarkable work that will become a ‘must-read’ for practitioners and students alike.” The concept for the encyclopedia grew out of a series of environmental case study lectures by Mr. Blauvelt to Rutgers University earth science and geology students that developed into a course on environmental disasters. The material from these lectures formed the basis for the encyclopedia, which details the mechanisms and consequences of air, water, and soil pollution. Focusing on sites notorious for pollution, including Love Canal, Bhopal, Chernobyl, and Industri-Plex in Woburn, Massachusetts, the encyclopedia uses these locations to illustrate basic earth science principals and track the evolution of public policy and responses toward environmental catastrophes. Mr. Blauvelt prepared the case studies that include the causes of the 1930s Dust Bowl, the Cuyahoga River pollution fires in Cleveland, and the status of Yucca Mountain in Nevada as a repository for the nation’s high-level radioactive waste, among others. Co-author Gates developed numerous key entries related to general science, geologic processes, and contaminant effects. “While a tremendous undertaking, creating the encyclopedia was also an immensely gratifying experience,” said Blauvelt. “Working with Professor Gates and our students enabled us all to see the impact we have on the environment in a new light. Producing this text will hopefully help others better understand how to preserve and improve our communities for future generations.” About GEI Consultants, Inc. Media Contact: ### |
