Risk Assessment is a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the risk posed to human health and/or the environment by the actual or potential presence and/or use of specific pollutants. GEI understands the complex factors that influence multi-pathway risk assessment such as inhalation of chemical vapors; ingestion of contaminated soil, water, or food, and skin contact with chemicals in water or soils. Our tiered approach to human health risk assessment is designed not only to meet the specific needs of a particular site or problem, but also to provide the most cost effective means of assessing potential health problems by quickly focusing on and limiting the scope of field investigations to the driving issues. We have pioneered advances in quantitative risk assessment to more realistically predict chemical exposure and risks. GEI has conducted numerous Superfund and State-run baseline human health risk assessments.

Many potentially responsible parties (PRPs) in environmental remediation cases are troubled by the suspicion that their properties may not be the sources of airborne contaminants present in soils that they are required to cleanup. Until recently, it has been difficult or prohibitively expensive to test this hypothesis using realistically available sampling data to determine fair and effective boundaries for remediation efforts. Our risk scientists are able to provide cost-effective techniques to determining liability sharing, including the pioneering of new simulations and other probabilistic techniques in human health risk assessments. These techniques overcome important limitations of older, deterministic risk assessment methods.
