GEI Expands Water Resources Practice

January 18, 2007 —

CENTENNIAL, Colo. — GEI Consultants, Inc., one of the nation’s leading water resources, geotechnical, and environmental engineering consulting firms, announces the addition of three senior executives to its Rocky Mountain regional headquarters, augmenting the existing practice with seasoned expertise in water resources engineering, program and project management.

GEI named Dan Johnson and John Harb as senior water resource engineers, and Steve Townsley as senior program manager. Dan Johnson will support clients as a practice expert and senior program manager, as well as lead GEI’s new Boulder office, opening this spring. John Harb will also work with GEI clients as a practice expert, senior program manager, and client liaison. Steve Townsley will provide GEI clients with project delivery expertise for water resources and hydropower projects, and will lead the Rocky Mountain Civil Engineering Group.

Prior to joining GEI, Johnson spent 4 years with MWH and nearly 30 years with URS, Woodward-Clyde. He is a renowned presenter and respected educator on dam design and construction at the Association for Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) and United States Safety of Dams (USSD) annual conferences. Johnson brings extensive experience supporting multi-disciplinary water supply projects, particularly in dam design and geotechnical engineering. Johnson has been a key participant on more than 200 water supply-related projects and is a recognized international expert in Roller-Compacted Concrete (RCC) dam technology. He has served as the independent consultant and chief inspector for countless dam safety inspections, and has published and presented numerous works including, “Dam Good for the Environment,” which was recently presented at the 2006 Colorado Water Congress.

Harb joins GEI Consultants after a distinguished 37-year career with the Federal Bureau of Reclamation. Harb managed water and power operations on notable projects on the lower stem of the Colorado River, including the Hoover Dam power generation and water deliveries to the All-American Canal and other water users in the lower Colorado River Basin. He brings sound expertise in water resources development studies and program management for water supply, water quality, safety of dams, and environmental compliance projects. Harb most recently managed the U.S. Department of Interior's National Irrigation Water Quality Program, including all aspects of water resources planning and environmental studies, construction, and project operations. In this capacity, he has represented the federal government in negotiations with water district managers and state agencies to implement plans for remediation of contaminated sites.

Townsley, an engineering veteran of 24 years, has led several large federal projects for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and National Park Service. He brings substantial experience in design/build, water supply, flood control, hydropower, and fish passage projects. Townsley is a Certified Project Management Professional, and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers, and the American Concrete Institute.

“At GEI, we are committed to the welfare of the wider community in which we work, and value professionals who share this broad vision,” said Richard Westmore, GEI’s Rocky Mountain Region water resources practice leader, vice president, and national chairman of the GEI Board of Directors. “We are delighted to add the talent and expertise that Dan, John, and Steve bring to the Rocky Mountain Region team.”

“In an effort to bring integrated solutions to our clients’ diverse projects, and to protect water for future generations, we will continue to strengthen and grow the Rocky Mountain Region’s water resource practice,” said Doug Charlton, vice president, and head of GEI’s Rocky Mountain Region. “Water resource management issues are critical and complex, demanding seasoned expertise, leadership, and integrity. Dan Johnson, John Harb, and Steve Townsley bring these qualities to our water resources group, and we are fortunate to have them join our Rocky Mountain Regional team.”
