Wemlinger Blending Pipeline

GEI was retained by CH2M Hill to perform geotechnical investigation and design for a new 66-inch diameter, 35,000-foot long steel pipeline for raw water conveyance as part of the City of Aurora’s Prairie Waters Project.

A critical part of the Prairie Waters Project, the raw water blending pipeline will connect the new Aurora Reservoir Water Purification Facility with the existing Wemlinger Water Treatment Plant, and allow for blending of water from the new treatment plant into the City’s treated water system. The pipeline alignment was located along the heavily populated and environmentally sensitive suburban corridor adjacent to Quincy Avenue.

The project involved the following specific tasks:

  • Data review and permitting including traffic control and drilling permits needed for work along the proposed pipeline alignment.
  • Geotechnical investigation and laboratory testing along the proposed alignment of the pipeline including studies for corrosion protection design.
  • Geotechnical engineering evaluations including pipe bedding and drainage, groundwater conditions, corrosion potential, construction recommendations, and evaluation of geotechnical conditions that may effect tunneling or pipe jacking.
  • Monitoring of groundwater monitoring wells in critical areas of the alignment.

GEI was able to successfully perform the required work with an accelerated schedule in order to meet the City of Aurora’s needs. GEI’s contributions to the project will be continuing in late 2006 as the project begins construction and GEI assists with construction oversight.
