BOSTON – GEI Consultants, Inc., one of the nation’s leading geotechnical, environmental and water resources engineering firms, announced that Roy D. Desrochers, P.E. has joined the firm as Project Manager for Sensory Technology. Desrochers specializes in sensory technology related to odor and tastes and its practical application to environmental and consumer challenges.

Reporting to New England Environmental Division Manager Patrick King, P.E., Desrochers will be responsible for expanding GEI’s sensory analysis service as well as screening and training GEI employees as sensory analysts. He will market and develop new clients, provide project management using sensory technology for existing GEI clients, and support existing cases in chemistry and geology.

Additionally, Desrochers will support and develop use of the zNose® in odor and chemical applications. The zNose Model 4200 analyzer is an ultra-fast field gas chromatograph that is capable of analyzing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and some semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) to part-per-billion (ppb) levels in less than two minutes. Since 2003, GEI has used the zNose to screen ambient air, soil, and soil gas for a number of clients.

With over 23 years of professional experience in sensory technology and extensive experience in the area of odor analysis, Desrochers has evaluated odors associated with a wide range of industries and applications. Prior to joining GEI, Desrochers served as founder and president of DesSense, Inc. where he managed complex cases for clients around the world. Previously, he spent over 18 years at the international consulting firm Arthur D. Little as a senior leader in the Sensory Technology Unit, and ultimately as manager of the unit.

A member of the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) for more than 20 years, Roy is currently the task force manager responsible for testing and developing methods for drinking water for Committee E-18. Roy is a member of the taste and odor committee of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and was recently appointed to its Standard Methods Committee. He is also a member of the Masters Brewers Association of the Americas (MBAA).
