In early settlements people built dams to store water, dug canals and wells to supply water, and built levees to protect their individual properties. Today, the focus of water is on supply, management, and flood control, often on a grand scale. Water projects have always required large investments of time and money, both public and private, as well as amazing feats of engineering. In the southwest, where water is scarce, demand is ever increasing, making the management of this precious resource of enormous social, economic and political consequence. In other areas of the U.S., water can at times be in great abundance, and at other times suffer drought. While water resources issues differ from region to region, they are as well interrelated and interdependent.

Over the past half century, Bookman-Edmonston (B-E), the renowned California water resources consulting firm, has played a critical role in many of the most important water resources projects in the American West. Likewise, GEI Consultants has for decades been a leader in water resources nationally, providing engineering services on more than 1,000 water-related projects such as dam design and construction, rehabilitation, analysis and inspections in 35 states from coast to coast. GEI acquired B-E in 2003, forming one of the leading national water resources firms. Today, GEI Consultants and GEI B-E together provide municipal, state and federal governmental agencies and private dam owners a full array of integrated professional water resources as well as geotechnical, environmental and ecological consulting services, employing many of the best minds in the business to help clients through technical excellence and innovation.
