The Endangered Species Act (E.S.A.) provides for the assessment and potential listing of species as threatened or endangered. Whereas any species which is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range is considered endangered, prior to listing or as part of assessments for remediation or recovery plans, biological assessments are conducted to determine the status of the populations and their critical habitat. These assessments are also conducted as part of many environmental impact studies or other federal actions. |
