Former MGP Site Ambient Air Monitoring

GEI was retained by CDM Engineers & Constructors Inc. (CDM) to conduct perimeter ambient air monitoring during remedial activities at a MGP site formerly operated by Albuquerque Gas & Electric Company, the predecessor company of Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM).

The facility is located in downtown Albuquerque and was in service between 1902 and 1931 as a coal-gasification plant. The First Baptist Church of Albuquerque currently owns the site.

Soil at the site was contaminated with coal tar residue from the former coal gasification activities. PNM has entered into a voluntary corrective action process for the AG&E MGP site with the State of New Mexico Environmental Department (NMED).

GEI provided technical support and consultation for remedial design and implementation tasks to CDM. In addition, GEI was the primary technical lead in developing and implementing the air monitoring program during the remedial activities.

GEI developed a comprehensive Ambient Air Monitoring Plan (AAMP) and a Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) for this project.

GEI was responsible for the design, installation, operation, calibration and maintenance of the time-integrated air monitoring equipment at four stations along the perimeter of the project site. The real-time air monitoring system included monitoring with hand-held instrumentation to measure concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter less than 10 micron in aerodynamic size (PM10).

The time-integrated air monitoring system included operation of four stations, each equipped with sampling equipment designed to collect integrated ambient air samples for VOCs, pronuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (Pas) and PM10 over a 24-hour sampling period. The time-integrated sampling system was operated 24 hours a day for the 40-day duration of the project. On-site meteorological data was also collected.

GEI was responsible for providing daily air monitoring reports to the remediation contractor, weekly briefings during project meetings, and preparation and submittal of the air monitoring activities results in a final project air monitoring report.
