Schiller Station Waterfront Improvements

GEI performed subsurface explorations and developed foundation design and construction recommendations for several proposed improvements to the PSNH Schiller Station waterfront facilities in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

The proposed improvements included replacement of on-site mooring and line guide structures, construction of a cellular breasting dolphin in the river, and dredging of an approximately 300- by 200-foot area of the river bottom south of the existing wharf.

For the mooring structures, GEI provided recommendations for the design and installation of battered mini-pile foundations, socketed into bedrock or glacial till soils, required to resist large uplift loads due to lateral mooring line loads of up to 210 kips. Design and construction recommendations were also provided for a cellular breasting dolphin, to be constructed in approximately 30- to 40-foot-deep water and able to resist large lateral breasting loads.

For the dredging operation, GEI developed recommendations concerning dredging methods, protection of existing structures adjacent to the dredge area, and land disposal of the dredge spoils.
