Water expert meets restoration design objectives with pragmatic, sustainable solutions
Denver, CO (February 21, 2023) – Tom Smrdel has joined GEI Consultants in Denver, CO, as a Senior Fluvial Geomorphologist. Tom brings more than 15 years of experience working alongside project stakeholders to understand their river issues and implement potential solutions. His experience in wetland design, dam removal, and channel restoration will help strengthen GEI’s position in leading the way in the challenging practice of balancing flood protection, water storage, habitat, and recreation.
“Tom is the river restoration expert that we have been searching for in order to expand our water practice in Colorado and throughout the Western U.S.,” says Lee Bergstedt, Denver Branch Manager. “His engineering experience in river hydraulics, restoration design, and construction management and monitoring in the Pacific Northwest, the Great Plains, and the Rocky Mountains, make him a key addition to the Denver team and a great resource throughout GEI.”
“I’m very excited to join GEI’s growing team of talented river and floodplain practitioners,” says Tom. “Rivers are my passion, and I have been lucky enough to spend most of my career monitoring and restoring them. I do my best work in multidisciplinary settings, and I look forward to integrating with the team at GEI and applying my skills to help identify and solve complex watershed problems in Colorado and beyond.”
Tom earned his master’s degree in Watershed Science from Colorado State University and his bachelor’s degree in Physical Geography from the University of Oregon. Tom is an active member of the Colorado Riparian Association, River Restoration Northwest, and the Colorado Water Congress.
