GEI’s Sam Merrill was the lead author for The Center for Infrastructure Protection Report titled Lifecycle Design and Cumulative Benefit-Cost Analysis for Transportation Resiliency, illustrating examples of lifecycle design projects and their cost-effective results. The article includes an in-depth look at design decisions for transportation upgrades, and illustrates the effective byproduct achieved when the least expensive but also resilient design is selected. Lifecycle design analysis brings benefits to most design methods for roads, bridges, and culverts, which typically attempt to plan for extreme weather using snapshots, and can sometimes lead to over- or underbuilding.
