Edward Gross, PhD, Honored with Prestigious Hugo B. Fischer Award
September 26, 2024Award celebrates advancements and successful applications of water resources modeling
FOLSOM, CA (Sept. 26, 2024) — Resource Management Associates (RMA) Principal Ed Gross, PhD, received the 2024 Hugo B. Fischer Award from the California Water and Environmental Modeling Forum (CWEMF) at the organization’s annual meeting in Folsom, California. The award recognizes individuals who have developed, refined, applied, or advanced computer models that benefit California water stakeholders and decision-makers.
CWEMF highlighted Ed’s efforts to improve hydrodynamic and water quality modeling of the San Francisco Estuary and other aquatic systems in California. Ed’s modeling has led to an enhanced understanding of the effect of hydrodynamics (the motion of fluids) and mixing on biological and ecological processes.
“Hugo B. Fischer was a renowned professor and author in the field of water resources. His pioneering contributions were widely used in research and planning studies to estimate salinity in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta,” says Ed. “I am deeply honored to receive the Hugo B. Fischer Award from CWEMF in recognition of the innovative work I have conducted with talented RMA colleagues and other collaborators.”
Ed has also worked to improve 3-D modeling of hydrodynamics and ecosystems, including:
- Implementation of turbulence models for some of the first 3-D models of the Bay-Delta
- Detailed analysis of mixing processes in the San Francisco estuary
- Accurate 3-D particle tracking
- Particle tracking with behavior for fish and zooplankton, and
- Water age-based simulation techniques
Ed and the full team at RMA joined GEI Consultants in January 2024. Visit our announcement to learn more.
CWEMF is a non-profit, non-partisan organization whose mission is to increase the usefulness of models for analyzing California’s water & environment related problems.
