GEI Consultant’s Boston Geotechnical Lab Officially Earns Validation from US Army Corps of Engineers

September 24, 2014

Boston, Mass.—September 24, 2014— GEI Consultants, Inc., one of the nation’s leading geotechnical, environmental, water resources, and ecological science and engineering firms, announced today that after an extensive 6-month process, its Boston geotechnical lab was officially validated by Materials Testing Center (MTC) and approved to perform materials testing on USACE projects.

The Corps MTC is committed to providing quality materials testing in a timely fashion and at reasonable cost, and is the only agency authorized to validate commercial laboratories to work for the Corps of Engineers.  Beginning in January 2013, the MTC performed an audit of GEI’s materials testing lab, conducted in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards.  The audit included reviewing our Quality Assurance methods, staff training records, equipment inspection, calibration assessment, and laboratory’s Quality Manual.

According to Douglas J. Aghjayan, P.E., who oversees GEI’s geotechnical laboratory and is responsible for training, supervising, and directing all engineers and technicians performing work in the laboratory, “earning this validation is significant for GEI, and provides new opportunities for pursuing either stand-alone materials testing work or enhancing and differentiating our qualifications as a prime or a sub-contractor on Corps pursuits.  Not only will we now be able to work on a variety of USACE projects we would not have been able to work on in the past, but we will also be able to partner with other firms whose competitive position will be strengthened through our lab’s MTC validation. ”

GEI’s Geotechnical Lab has been providing high quality testing services for its internal projects and external clients since the inception of the company.  The lab provides high-end laboratory testing services for soil, rock, and soil-like materials such as cement-ash-bentonite mixes, mine tailings, and coal combustion by-products, and range from the routine to highly specialized and research oriented.
