GEI’s Chia K. Tan Earns Fellow Honors from The American Society of Civil Engineers

November 3, 2016

Boston, Mass. – November 3, 2016 – GEI Consultants, Inc., one of the nation’s leading geotechnical, environmental, water resources, and ecological science and engineering firms, announced today that Geotechnical Engineer and Senior Consultant Chia K. Tan, Ph.D, P.E., F.ASCE, has been named a Fellow by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Board of Direction. A prestigious honor held by less than 3.5% of ASCE members, Tan was recognized for his more than 35 years of geotechnical and geostructural engineering experience and accomplishments.

Tan has worked on some of the world’s tallest building, including the 128-story Shanghai Tower in China, the 107-story Lotte World Tower in Busan, South Korea, and the 123-story Jamsil World Tower in Seoul, South Korea. Combining the use of conventional soil and rock mechanics, advanced numerical modeling, and the wealth of his and his peers’ experiences, he helped to improve and advance the state of practice of foundation engineering in high rise and supertall buildings. As an expert who solves underground issues related to the world’s most complex building projects, Tan is an integral part of GEI’s complex geotechnical group.

Tan’s graduate research work provided the background framework for the first load and resistance factor design methodology for design of bridge foundations and substructures in the U.S. In addition, he contributed significantly to the Foundations and Substructures sections of the first AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (1996) and coauthored “Manuals for the Design of Bridge Foundations,” the first LRFD design manuals and still widely used in the highway and transportation construction industry.

He is actively involved with several professional organizations at both the national and local levels. He contributed significantly to the standard ASCE 32-01 Design and Construction of Frost Protected Shallow Foundations, and was the editor of Geotechnical Special Publication No. 73: Innovative Design and Construction for Foundations and Substructures Subject to Freeze and Frost.

ASCE is a professional association and is the world’s largest publisher of civil engineering content in the world, a leading provider of technical and professional conferences and continuing education, and a frontrunner in developing codes and standards that protect the public.
