Fire Captain brings far-reaching experience with wildfire risk and recovery

OAKLAND, CA (December 14, 2022) – Fire Captain Josh Wilkins has joined GEI’s Wildfire Practice as a Senior Wildfire Risk Manager. Josh spent 25 years as a firefighter (now retired) with the San Bernardino County Fire Department. During his career, Josh managed and responded to hundreds of wildfires across the western United States. As an Incident Management Team Leader, and as a Public Information Officer, he also provided critical wildfire information to every major news network in the nation during active wildfires.

“GEI is committed to helping clients reduce their wildfire risk prior to wildfire events and to recover after devastating fire impacts,” says Rebecca Verity, GEI’s Climate Program Manager. “Josh’s experience will help our clients understand, monitor, reduce risks from, and recover from the West’s changing wildfire regime.”

In addition to his extraordinary background in wildfire behavior and risk management, Josh is proficient in using drones, satellite imagery, remote sensors, and related technologies for early wildfire detection and warning, improving wildfire response coordination, and prioritizing post-wildfire recovery activities. Josh’s expertise complements GEI’s ecologists and emergency planners, enabling GEI’s infrastructure and climate teams to better support clients with their resiliency and recovery needs.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to join a diverse team that shares my passion for wildfire mitigation and prevention on a broad regional scale,” says Josh.

Josh is an active father of four (9-year old boy/girl twins, and two daughters ages 11 and 28), a USFS Tactical Fire Remote Sensing Advisory Committee Member, and a Higher Ground-Fly Fishing Instructor/Guide. In his free time, Josh enjoys fly fishing, hiking, skiing, and drone photography.
